What if you cannot resolve species that we need resolved?

Quite often, a given sequence is shared by multiple, closely-related species. It is possible that we can use hierarchical sequencing to resolve species that cannot be resolved using our primary genes. Contact us to discuss this further.

If I am submitting samples from omnivores, can you tell what proportion of their diet is plants vs. animals?

For all intents and purposes, this just isn’t technically possible at this point.

How many plant species are in your library?

We have over 50,000 and are continuing to expand our library.

What barcode do you use for plants?

For plants, we are using a portion of the chloroplast trnL intron using the c and h trnL primers.

How long is the average sequence you use as a barcode?

Our OTU’s range from 35-180 base pairs. Average is about 150 bp.

Can you tell us if a certain species is in your library? Can you send us a list of plant species that are in your library?

Contact us about this. We’ll work to have a list up soon.

All the species names are in Latin. Can you give me common names?

Common names aren’t always that commonly understood. We recommend plants.usda.gov if a translation is necessary.

What if my species isn’t in your library?

Leaves or body parts of candidate species can be placed in a vial and sent to us. We can sequence them and then add them to our library. Our fee is $10 per species.

Can you sequence the diets of fish or fish in diets?

Almost. Contact us regarding this capability.

Can you determine lichens in diet?

We can do this now.

Can you sequence the diets of predators?

We’ve sequenced a few species of predators (and omnivores now). There are some special considerations for this, but we should be able to do it.

Can you sequence honey for us to see where it came from?

We now can sequence plant DNA in honey. We are working now to see how well this approach will work to determine provenance.

How long does it take to get information back?

Turnaround time is estimated to be 4-6 weeks. Rush service is available.

If my needs are specialized, can you perform specialized protocols?

We have application scientists that are available for this. Contact us regarding consulting work.

Can you use a different barcode to give greater taxonomic resolution?

There are longer/different barcodes out there, e.g. ITS2, but they often are not good for providing quantitative reconstructions of the relative proportions of different taxa in a sample. We can do a second sequencing run with a different barcode to further identify taxa. Contact us for discussing this option.
